The B.I.B.L.E - Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth

Over the years, I've heard people say that the Bible doesn't make any sense and that it's a difficult book to read. In a way, I tend to agree because it doesn't really make a lot of sense, and it can be difficult to read, but that's if you have never been told how to read it.

Soon after becoming a Christian, I started to read the Bible, and at first I couldn't make head or tail of it, but then, with some help and advice from other Christians, I started to approach it in a different way, which made me see it in a totally different light. I realised that it is primarily about how God relates to people, how people relate to God, and how people relate to each other.

Today, when I'm speaking in public, I often refer to the Bible as an instruction book. The letters from the word Bible could stand for: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. The Bible comes in two parts, part one and part two. Christians call it the Old Testament and the New. The Bible is not one book but sixty six books in one cover. There are thirty-nine books in part one and twenty-seven books in part two.

You don't read it like you would any other book, from front to back. The best way to start reading a Bible is one book at a time. A good starting point is the book of John, which is the fourth book found in the New Testament. If you can, get a Bible that has a brief introduction to each book at the beginning. This will help you understand something about the writer and the context in which it is written. 'All scripture is God-breathed', so remember this, that even though the Bible is thousands of years old, God is still speaking to people through it's pages, and the precepts, patterns, and principles still apply to us today. God's instruction book is timeless!
